How to prep for your newborn session:
-
Lifestyle sessions are very relaxed. When I first get there, I will walk around your home to get our plan for the day. Count on me moving some furniture to face the best light! Plan on me being there about 2 hours. Lifestyle photos will be mostly candid and documentary style, capturing your new life at home with your newest family member! RELAX! We are not in any rush at all! Chaos is normal is and it can be beautiful! These sessions are laidback and flexible so that we can capture all the beauty that parenthood is!
-
Turn up the heat! Baby will be much happier in a warm environment, especially for any naked/diaper pictures. We will be warm but the baby will not, as they can not regulate their internal temperature yet so they will need it warmer.
-
Try and feed baby shortly before your session time; we want baby to have a full belly and will hopefully be happy and cooperative for pics! If you would like any feeding/nursing pictures, we can do this at the next feeding. Be prepared to do many small feedings if baby gets fussy!
-
What to wear: These are pictures to hang in your home, so you want to make sure your outfits fit that feel. Select outfits that will flow well with the aesthetic of your home decor — coordinating is key! You want your outfits to compliment each other and your home well. I really love solid neutrals for this type of session. Feel free to have your clothes out so we can style you or send me photos ahead of time and I will help guide you!
-
Try to de-clutter. Your home does NOT have to be perfect, I promise. It’s your home and it’s supposed to look lived in. Focus on your favorite rooms with the best natural lighting – Great spots for newborn sessions include the nursery, master bedroom and living room couch. You can tidy up a bit in those areas and basically put stuff in the room where it belongs and toss the rest in a closet until I leave. This includes extra burp rags, breast pump, and extra pacifiers laying everywhere! Also things like tv remotes that we don't want in your photos!
-
We will be embracing your home’s natural light! Open up blinds, turn off the overhead lights and taking advantage of the natural brightness as much as possible. We'll place you next to windows as much as possible for pics. Even on cloudy days! Again, we can move some furniture to face the light if we need to.
-
If doing nursery photos, I encourage either a white or neutral crib sheet. Crib sheets with too much color will reflect onto baby’s face, casting a colorful shadow that’s challenging to edit out later on. Too much pattern on the crib sheet will also distract from your baby in the photos, so keep your patterns simple!
-
I encourage parents to let any siblings to be their true authentic selves. We will move at their comfort level and add in games and playing with toys to help them warm up. The whole idea of a lifestyle type session is to capture the family in a true and authentic way!
-
Add your pets to your photos! Pets are part of the family, too, so we'll want to incorporate them into your session as well!
